Van Riebeeck’s Hedge

2017-2019

After more than a decade of struggle, Heritage Western Cape decided at its meeting of 8 February 2019 that the name Van Riebeeck fence would no longer be used for the wild almond avenue in Bishopscourt, that the avenue would retain its grade two conservation status and that a new interpretation will be drawn up for it. We were asked for suggestions, and suggested that it be considered an example of a living fence, from an unknown farm from an unknown time. Seeds from the trees were eaten by the Cape Koina.

More information about the fence and associated misinformation is detailed in Dr. Dan Sleigh’s article on Litnet: https://www.litnet.co.za/politieke-versinsels-rakende-die-amandelheining/
